Gentlemen, Start Your Engines

The engine generator sets (foreground) for Costa Deliziosa are delivered to Fincantieri's Marghera yard near Venice, and they are now being installed. The 92,700-ton vessel is the sister to Costa Luminosa which will be delivered in June 2009, and can be seen in the background.

Costa Deliziosa will have six of the diesel engine generator sets. Four will be 12-cylinder 356,400-pound, 12,000 kW generators, and two others will be 8-cylnder 25,740-pound 8,000 kW models. Together they can provide about 64 Mw of power, which is about enough to power a town of about 40,000.

Work began this week on their installation, and the ship will more or less then be built around them. Delivery of Costa Deliziosa, which will be the 15th ship in the Costa fleet, is set for January 2010.
