Why They Christen Ships in Venice

They christen ships in Venice usually for one of three reasons. (A) It's near several major shipyards where the ships are built. (B) It's where the ship's first cruise will sail from. (C) There are such stunning visuals available as the new ship sails into Venice for the first time, as you can see in this series of photos.

Carnival Magic arrived in Venice Saturday (April 30, 2011) morning for the first time. It will be christened there on Sunday and enter service from there later Sunday afternoon.
