From the petite roll department: When passengers witnessed the woman
jumping over the rail at the aft end of Carnival Conquest Saturday, they
immediately reported what they saw, and the bridge, assuming the woman had
landed in the water, began following their procedure for a person overboard.
That involved slowing the ship and following a turning procedure that would put
the ship back to the spot where it was when the person went into the water. With
that turn came a normal roll of the ship, and with that, water spilled from the
pools both from the roll itself and the inertia. Perhaps with the Crown Princess
incident still fresh in their minds, a few passengers reported their estimates
of rather large degrees of roll. Conquest's Capt. Marino tells us that it was
"decisively less than 5 degrees." He said there weren't even any
reports of damages or injuries. (As CND reported earlier, it was quickly
discovered the woman had not landed in the water, but instead had died when she
landed on a protruding balcony four decks below.) No doubt, as it gets reported
by passengers on bulletin boards and to their grandchildren, that 5 degrees will
be multiplied many times.
